Winter Squad Training

Blog

What do Pool Rats to over winter? They swim.

All Development, Social and Competition squads carry on through winter. In winter, we will be adding a dry land warm up so our athletes are getting into the water feeling warm and ready to swim, and to work on their land based athletic competencies. The pool sits around 28 degrees at the moment and will remain so during June-August.

We practice ongoing enrolments which means you will automatically be included in winter season unless we’ve heard from you otherwise.

Why do it?

1. Swimming at squad level is a perishable skill. We work really hard to build and maintain our water fitness and stroke. A long break sets us back.

2. Dry land training gives us a gift. By removing the weight of the water, and the complexity of breath control, we can get a better understanding of muscle recruitment, timing, balance and strength.

3. Summer sports really are built in winter.

You may like to consider adding Dry Land Training to your child’s athletic load over winter – run by our Swim Coaches, and the Strength and Conditioning Coaches Jesse and Josh, these are 45 minute sessions exclusively on land (at the weight lifting gym at Samford Valley Physio for senior athletes – Juniors at the pool).

Focus on the fundamentals of movement: Developing strong fundamentals of movement; muscle recruitment, agility, balance, coordination, and speed.

Swimming Benefits of Dry Land Training: Swimming can be physically tricky to put together in the water alone. Swimming often requires a fast, repetitive movement in the legs, with a strong, controlled movement through the arm pattern. Removing the weight of the water, and the complexity of breath control can enormously benefit an emerging athletes ability to put this type of physical timing together.
